Original Floors in Cambridge Heritage Homes
Galt was largely built by Scottish stonemasons, and Preston and Hespeler grew around their mills. Many of their homes still have original pine, fir or oak floors.
Those floors often spent decades under carpet or linoleum, which protected them. Once uncovered, they are usually in better shape than owners expect.
Dickson Hill and West Galt homes often have wide pine in bedrooms and oak in front rooms. Preston and Hespeler mill-era houses tend to have narrow pine or fir throughout.
Sanding Softwood Without Ruining It
Pine and fir are much softer than oak. An aggressive drum sander pass can gouge them deeply in seconds.
We start with a gentler grit, use lighter pressure and keep the machine moving. Nail heads are set below the surface first, since many old floors are face nailed.
We also measure how much wood is left above the tongue. Some Cambridge floors have been sanded several times already.
Patching With Salvaged Boards
Old homes often have boards damaged by radiator leaks, old pet stains or removed walls. New lumber does not match century-old wood.
We patch with salvaged boards of similar age and width wherever possible, weaving them in so the repair does not show.
Finishes for Heritage Floors
Oil-modified polyurethane gives the warm amber tone that suits Victorian and Edwardian interiors. Water-based finishes keep old pine lighter and dry faster.
Hardwax oils give a soft, low-sheen look that many heritage owners prefer. We test samples on your floor before deciding.

Ask for a Free Quote How do I know if the floor under my Galt carpet can be refinished?
We lift the carpet in a closet or corner during the estimate and check the boards, the fastening and how much wood remains. Most original floors we uncover in Cambridge can be refinished.
Can face-nailed pine floors be sanded?
Yes. We set the nail heads below the surface first so they do not tear the sandpaper or leave bright spots, then sand with lighter pressure suited to softwood.
Will my old floor look new after refinishing?
It will look restored, not new. Century floors keep their character, including some nail holes, colour variation and patina. Most owners prefer that to a perfect modern look.
