Hard floors dominate new builds, but carpet still wins in some rooms. It is warmer, quieter and safer on stairs than any hard surface.
Bedrooms, basements, family rooms and staircases are where we install it most. In a basement over a cold slab, a good carpet and pad makes a real difference to comfort.
Carpet also costs less per square foot than most hard floors. For landlords and first-time buyers, that matters.
Different rooms call for different carpet formats. Here is how we match them.
Broadloom carpet, sold in 12 or 15 foot wide rolls, is the standard for bedrooms. We choose widths that avoid seams in most rooms.
In basements, we use a pad with a moisture barrier over the slab and check for dampness first. Olefin or solution-dyed nylon handles basement conditions best.
Stairs take more wear than any other carpeted area. We use dense, low-pile carpet that will not show crushed nosings after a year.
Runners are another option. They leave the edges of a wood staircase exposed and are fixed with rods or hidden staples.
Carpet tile, usually 24 by 24 inches, is standard in offices. Damaged or stained tiles can be swapped without replacing the whole floor.
For rental units, we recommend durable, stain-resistant broadloom in a neutral colour, bought from a line you can match later.
Fibre decides how a carpet looks in five years. Here is our honest take on each.
Most people choose carpet by touching the sample. What they feel after installation depends mostly on the pad.
Rebond pad is rated by density in pounds per cubic foot. A 6 pound pad feels soft but breaks down quickly. An 8 pound pad is our standard for homes, and 10 pound suits stairs and heavy traffic.
Thicker is not better. Pad over about 7/16 inch lets the carpet flex too much, which wears the backing and voids some carpet warranties. Memory foam and moisture-barrier pads are available where they make sense.
Carpet relaxes over time, especially in humid Ontario summers. If it was not stretched tight when installed, ripples and waves appear within a year or two.
A knee kicker can only move carpet a short distance. A power stretcher braces against the opposite wall and pulls the carpet tight across the whole room, as industry installation standards require.
We power stretch every room larger than a closet. It takes longer, and it is the main reason our carpets stay flat.
Seams are unavoidable in wide rooms, but where they fall is a choice. We plan them before cutting.
Seams should run parallel to the main light source, usually the window, so light does not cast a shadow across them. They should also run with traffic, not across a doorway where feet land.
We join seams with hot-melt tape and seal the cut edges so they will not fray. A well-planned seam is almost impossible to find.
Waterfall installation lets the carpet fall over the edge of the tread straight down to the riser. It is quicker and costs less.
Cap and band, also called Hollywood style, wraps the carpet tightly under the nosing and down the riser. It looks tailored and suits more formal staircases.

A good nylon or triexta carpet over quality pad lasts 10 to 15 years in a busy home. Polyester usually shows traffic patterns sooner, often in 5 to 8 years in hallways and on stairs.
Yes. We cut stair and landing pieces from the same roll so the pile direction and colour match. We also plan seams so they fall at the back of a tread, not across the walking line.
Not necessarily. Carpet traps dust until it is vacuumed, rather than letting it float around.
With a HEPA vacuum and regular cleaning, many allergy sufferers do fine. Low-VOC carpet and pad also help.
