Why LVP Took Over Waterloo Region Basements
Walk through any new build in Doon South, Huron Park or Baden and you will find vinyl plank in the basement. It is waterproof, warm enough on a slab with the right underlay, and it looks like wood.
Many Waterloo Region basements sit close to the water table. Carpet and laminate there were always a gamble, and sump pump failures made that gamble expensive.
Vinyl plank changed the math. A leak means drying the space and clicking the floor back together, not replacing it.
LVP, SPC and WPC, What the Labels Actually Mean
Shoppers get stuck on these acronyms. Here is what each one means in plain terms.
LVP is the umbrella term for any luxury vinyl plank. It includes thin, flexible glue-down planks and thick, rigid click planks.
SPC, or stone plastic composite, has a rigid core made mostly of limestone powder. It is dense, dent resistant and stays stable as temperatures change. It is our usual recommendation.
WPC, or wood plastic composite, has a foamed core. It feels softer and warmer, but dents more easily under furniture.
Wear Layers, Thickness and What to Ignore on the Spec Sheet
The wear layer is the clear top film, measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). It decides how long the floor looks new.
- 6 to 12 mil: light residential, bedrooms and guest rooms.
- 20 mil: heavy residential and light commercial, our pick for rentals, pets and busy kitchens.
- 28 to 40 mil: commercial, retail and multi-unit common areas.
Ignore total plank thickness as a quality signal. A thick plank with a 6 mil wear layer will look worn long before a thinner plank with 20 mil.
Floating Versus Glue-Down
Most homes get floating click planks. They go down fast, tolerate small imperfections and can be lifted after a leak.
Glue-down is the only correct answer in some spaces. Large open areas over about 40 feet, sunrooms with big temperature swings, and commercial floors with rolling carts all need planks bonded to the substrate.

Subfloor Flatness, the Reason Most Vinyl Installs Fail
Vinyl plank is thin and follows the surface beneath it. A dip lets the locking joint flex every time someone steps on it, and eventually the joint breaks or peaks.
Most manufacturers require the floor to be flat within 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and within 1/8 inch over 6 feet. We check every room with a long straightedge before quoting.
High spots are ground down. Low spots get a cement-based self-levelling compound or patch. Soft or damaged subfloors are repaired through our subfloor repair and replacement service first.

Cold Weather, Direct Sunlight and Plank Movement
Vinyl expands in heat and shrinks in cold more than wood does. Two local situations cause trouble.
Unheated spaces like three-season rooms, cottages and garages can drop well below freezing. Flexible vinyl can crack, and floating floors can open gaps. Only products rated for those temperatures belong there.
Large south-facing windows can heat a floor surface past 40 degrees Celsius. Planks buckle where the sun hits. We recommend blinds or UV film, and glue-down installs with a heat-rated adhesive in sunrooms.
LVP in Rentals and High-Turnover Units
For landlords in Waterloo's student areas and Kitchener's rental stock, vinyl plank is the most practical floor there is. It survives spills, pets and move-outs.
We recommend a 20 mil wear layer and a common colour you can buy again. Keep a full box after installation so single damaged planks can be swapped between tenants.

Ask for a Free Quote Is vinyl plank actually waterproof or just water resistant?
The planks themselves are waterproof. Water will not swell an SPC or WPC core. But water can still get through the seams and sit on the subfloor underneath, so a flood still means lifting the floor to dry the space below.
Will vinyl plank crack in an unheated space over winter?
Flexible vinyl can become brittle below freezing, and floating floors can gap as they shrink. Some rigid SPC products are rated for unheated cottages and sunrooms. We check the manufacturer's temperature range before installing in any space that is not heated all year.
Does vinyl plank need to acclimate before installation?
Most manufacturers ask for 24 to 48 hours in the room at normal living temperature. We deliver the flooring ahead of time and lay the boxes flat. Planks brought in from a cold truck in January always get the full time.
Can LVP go over existing tile or hardwood?
Often, yes. Firmly bonded tile works if we fill the grout lines with a skim coat so they do not show through.
Well-fastened hardwood works if it is flat. We never install over carpet or cushioned sheet vinyl.
