Slate's Natural Texture and Grip
Slate splits naturally along its layers, leaving a textured surface called a cleft face. That texture gives it grip no smooth manufactured tile can match.
In Waterloo Region, where boots bring snow, meltwater and salt through the door for five months a year, that grip is a real safety feature. It is why slate has been used in farmhouse entries for generations.
The texture also hides dirt, scuffs and wear. A slate floor looks better at twenty years old than most tiles look at five.
Gauged Versus Ungauged Slate
This one detail changes the whole installation, and few buyers are told about it.
Gauged or calibrated slate has its back ground flat, so every tile is the same thickness. It installs like porcelain with a standard notched trowel.
Ungauged slate keeps its natural split on both faces. Tiles can vary from 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch thick within the same box.
Why Ungauged Slate Needs a Thicker Mortar Bed
A thin layer of thinset cannot make up for a 1/2 inch difference in tile thickness. Ungauged slate is set in a thick bed of medium-bed mortar, with each tile back-buttered and adjusted individually.
It is slower, more skilled work. It is also what gives ungauged slate its rugged, old-world look.
Spalling and Flaking, and How to Avoid It
Slate quality varies widely by quarry. Poor slate has weak bonds between its layers, and it can spall or flake, shedding thin sheets from the surface.
Flaking is worse in wet entries and where salt dries on the stone. It is not an installation fault, and no sealer fixes it.
We only install slate from quarries with a proven history. We also rub test samples before delivery. A few extra dollars per square foot at the start saves a replacement later.
Colour Range, Fading and Clefting
Slate comes in charcoal, black, green, rust, copper and multicolour blends. Multicolour slates vary widely from tile to tile, so we mix boxes during layout to spread the colour evenly.
Some rust and copper slates contain iron that can fade or change in strong sunlight. Black and charcoal slates are the most colour stable.
Clefting depth also varies. Deeply clefted stone has more grip and more character, but it is harder to clean than a lightly clefted or honed slate.
Sealing Slate, Enhancing Versus Natural Look
Impregnating sealers soak into the stone and protect it without changing its look. The slate keeps its natural, matte appearance.
Colour-enhancing sealers deepen the tones and give a permanently wet look. Multicolour and green slates look especially striking with an enhancer.

Grout Selection for Textured Stone
Slate is usually grouted with wider joints of 3/8 to 1/2 inch, especially ungauged stone. Sanded cement grout is standard for these widths.
Colour matters more than people expect. A mid-tone grey or charcoal hides dirt and ties multicolour slate together, while light grout shows every footstep in a mudroom.
For narrow joints on gauged slate, we can use high-performance or epoxy grout for extra stain resistance.

Ask for a Free Quote Does slate flooring flake over time?
Good slate should not. Low-grade slate with weak layers can spall or flake, especially in wet entries. We source slate from quarries with a proven track record and check samples before installing.
Is slate good for a mudroom in winter?
It is one of the best choices. The textured surface grips wet boots, the dark tones hide salt and mud, and good slate handles meltwater without trouble. Seal it and keep up with the salt.
What is the difference between gauged and ungauged slate?
Gauged slate has its back ground flat to an even thickness, so it sets like regular tile. Ungauged slate varies in thickness from tile to tile and needs a thicker mortar bed to finish level.
Does slate need sealing?
Yes. Sealing protects slate from staining and makes cleaning easier.
You can choose a natural-look impregnating sealer or a colour-enhancing sealer that gives a permanently wet look. Most slate floors need resealing every two to three years.
