Why a Dance Floor Is a Two-Part System
A dance floor is really two decisions. The sprung subfloor underneath protects dancers' bodies, and the performance surface on top gives the right grip and feel.
Most people only think about the surface. But marley laid straight onto concrete feels hard and punishes joints, no matter how good the vinyl is.
We plan both layers together so the floor suits your dancers, your styles and your space.
Sprung Subfloor Systems
The sprung base absorbs landing forces and returns energy to the dancer.
Foam Block and Pad Systems
Engineered foam blocks or continuous pads sit under plywood or composite panels. They are lower in height and faster to install than basketweave systems.
Many are available as portable panels that lock together, ideal for shared spaces.
Performance Surfaces
The top layer is what dancers feel and see.
Marley Vinyl, Permanent and Portable
Marley is a specialist vinyl dance surface with controlled grip. It suits ballet, contemporary, jazz and most modern styles.
It comes in rolls, usually about 2 metres wide, and can be taped as a portable floor or bonded and welded as a permanent one.
Hardwood for Tap and Percussive Work
Tap, Irish and flamenco need a resonant hardwood surface that sounds right and takes the impact of metal taps. Maple is the usual choice.

Multi-style studios often combine a hardwood base with portable marley rolled out for specific classes.
Slip Resistance, Grip and Dancer Safety
A dance floor must grip enough to turn safely but not so much that feet catch. Marley is designed for that balance.
Wax, polish and oil soaps make floors dangerously slippery and ruin marley. Street shoes bring in grit that wears the surface and changes its grip.
We give you care instructions and recommend a separate entrance area for changing shoes.
Seaming, Taping and Portable Layouts
Marley rolls are laid parallel, usually running away from the front of the room, so dancers travel along seams rather than across them.
Portable floors are taped along every seam and the perimeter with vinyl dance tape. Permanent floors can be heat welded for a seamless finish.
Rolls are relaxed flat before installation so they do not ripple.
Cleaning Marley Without Destroying It
Dust mop or vacuum before classes to remove grit. Damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner made for dance vinyl.
Never use wax, polish, oil soaps or bleach. They change the grip and break down the surface.
Remove tape residue carefully with a suitable remover, not solvents that soften the vinyl.

Ask for a Free Quote What is a sprung floor and do I need one?
A sprung floor is a subfloor built to flex slightly and absorb impact when dancers land. It reduces strain on ankles, knees and backs. Any studio teaching jumps, which is almost every style, should have one.
Can marley be laid over an existing floor?
Yes. Portable marley can be rolled out over a flat, clean hard floor and taped at the seams. On concrete, dancers still need a sprung base under it for impact protection.
What floor works for both ballet and tap?
Many studios use a sprung subfloor with a hardwood surface for tap and roll portable marley over it for ballet classes. Others dedicate one room to each. We help you plan around your timetable.
Can a dance floor be portable?
Yes. Portable sprung panels lock together and can be stored, and marley rolls up. It is a common setup in church halls, schools and shared community spaces.
